NYSC Has Come to Stay – Ahmadu Ali

The pioneer Chief Executive of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Colonel Ahmadu Ali (Rtd), has reaffirmed the enduring relevance of the Scheme, declaring that it “has come to stay.”

Ali made this assertion while receiving the current Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, during a courtesy visit to his Abuja residence.

Reflecting on over five decades of the Scheme’s existence, Ali noted that the NYSC has consistently endeared itself to Nigerians through its impactful programmes, nationwide service, and positive visibility. He emphasized that its contributions have strengthened its case for continued existence.

The former NYSC National Director (now Director-General) commended General Yakubu Gowon for his visionary leadership, particularly for establishing the Scheme in 1973. He described the NYSC as an enduring initiative whose relevance remains strong in contemporary Nigeria.

Ali highlighted the Scheme’s critical role in promoting national unity, noting that it provides young Nigerians with opportunities to live and serve in states outside their own—experiences they might not otherwise have had.

He further explained that the NYSC equips corps members with resilience and adaptability by exposing them to new environments, thereby fostering tolerance and mutual understanding among diverse groups.

Applauding successive NYSC managers, Ali credited them for sustaining the founding vision and strengthening the institution over the years. He expressed pride in how the Scheme has evolved, noting that initial skepticism and protests by graduates at its inception have since given way to widespread anticipation and enthusiasm.

Ali concluded by pledging his continued prayers for the sustainability and success of the NYSC.

In his remarks, the Director-General, Brigadier General Nafiu, said the visit was to honour Ali as the pioneer leader of the Scheme and to acknowledge the solid foundation he laid. He commended Ali’s administrative skill, foresight, and leadership in overcoming early challenges, noting that the NYSC remains deeply indebted to his legacy.
