Senator Lawal Usman Intervenes in Power, Education, and Road Infrastructure in Kaduna Central

Senator Lawal Usman has embarked on a series of targeted development interventions across communities in Kaduna Central, with a focus on improving electricity supply, expanding educational support, and addressing critical road infrastructure needs.

Speaking during a recent engagement, the senator explained that his intervention in electricity projects was prompted by the prolonged lack of power in several communities. He noted that many residents had been without electricity for over two years due to the absence of functional transformers.

According to him, electricity is central to economic activities, security, and overall quality of life, particularly in densely populated communities with thousands of residents. To address this challenge, transformers were provided to affected areas to restore and sustain reliable power supply.

Beyond electricity, Senator Usman identified education as a key pillar of his development agenda. He disclosed that a scholarship scheme was introduced to support students in tertiary institutions, including those at CALSO Igbo, his alma mater. Currently, about 1,300 students are benefiting from the programme.

He explained that the scholarship initiative is designed to be sustainable, supporting beneficiaries throughout the duration of their academic programmes until graduation, rather than serving as a one-off intervention. Priority is given to students in disciplines such as Engineering, Medicine, and Agriculture, with beneficiaries required to meet established academic standards.

On renewable energy, the senator acknowledged the importance of solar power in community development and confirmed that solar streetlights have been installed in several locations. However, he emphasized that while solar lighting enhances visibility and security, it is inadequate for powering household appliances and supporting small-scale businesses. This, he said, informed the complementary investment in transformers to meet broader electricity demands.

Addressing infrastructure concerns, Senator Usman also spoke on the Kabala West Road, which residents have identified as a vital access route. He confirmed that following consultations with the community, the road has been captured in the current development budget and will be addressed accordingly.

The senator stated that the interventions are aimed at improving living conditions, strengthening access to education, and promoting sustainable development across Kaduna Central.
