Dr Omokaro calls for stiffer punishment for book piracy in Nigeria

Few days ago, Network of book clubs and reading culture promoters in Nigeria (NBRP), Abuja and partners organised Abuja Book City, to encourage reading culture in Nigeria.

The event converged dignitaries from different parts of the country, including scholars, book lovers, academia publishers and key stakeholders.

One of the dignitaries in attendance was Dr Dominic Omokaro, President and Chairman of Council, Nigerian Library Association (NLA), in an Exclusive Interview with Journalists, he said, “Book City’s” is an avenue to promote reading culture.

He decried that people no longer read, rather they focus on watching movies and comedies.

He charged the government to appoint Special Adviser to the President on Library and information who will prepare a memo and remind the President on significance of library in the State and local governments.

Dr Omokaro use the opportunity to condemn plagiarism and piracy which have eaten deep into the fabrics of the country, denying authors the opportunity to enjoy their right and fruits of their labour.

In his words:

“Authors are not making money because of piracy. Also, those patronizing them should also be punished.”

Illustrating the urgly trends called piracy, he use fake drugs as an example, “like fake drugs, publisher do not make money from books”. He said.

He called on the media, CSO’s and well meaning Nigerians to join hands to advocate for reading culture and discourage piracy in Nigerian.

There are many benefits of reading books. This includes: improved memory, enhanced focus and concentration, increased vocabulary, and reduced stress. It also promotes mental health, empathy, and knowledge acquisition. Reading can even be a form of entertainment and a tool for personal growth.
