TMV Hails Release of Funds for Backlog of Lecturers’ Allowances

The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) has commended the Federal Government for the release of funds to facilitate the payment of eight months of accumulated Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) to eligible academic staff in federal tertiary institutions.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi, and Secretary, Segun Ogedengbe, the group described the payment, covering the period from January to August 2026, as a demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to implementing its agreements with academic staff.

The statement noted that the payment is in line with the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria–Academic Staff Union of Universities (FGN-ASUU) Agreement.

“We note that the payment is in line with the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria–Academic Staff Union of Universities (FGN-ASUU) Agreement.

“It is also gratifying that the payment is to be applied across federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education,” the group stated.

TMV said the development would contribute to stability in the nation’s tertiary education system, particularly by helping to reduce the likelihood of disruptions to the academic calendar arising from unresolved issues over salaries and allowances.

“We commend the move by the Federal Government as it will guarantee stability in the academic calendar of tertiary institutions, unlike in the past when Nigerian tertiary institutions witnessed prevalent industrial actions by academic staff,” the statement added.

The group also commended the administration for what it described as the prompt payment of salaries and allowances to workers in tertiary institutions, as well as measures aimed at safeguarding the retirement benefits of academic and non-academic staff.

“It is also a thing of joy that since President Tinubu’s assumption of office, tertiary institutions have witnessed prompt payment of salaries and allowances, as well as assurance of retirement benefits for academic and non-academic retirees,” TMV said.

The group noted that disputes between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and successive federal administrations over salaries, allowances and other conditions of service have, over the years, contributed to disruptions in the nation’s university system.

TMV said the latest payment would help address part of the outstanding financial obligations to academic staff and contribute to improved industrial relations in the tertiary education sector.
