RAMADAN, LENT: NUJ FCT BOSS TASKS FAITHFUL ON PRAYERS FOR NIGERIA

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has called on Nigerians to seize the spiritual significance of Ramadan and Lent to intensify prayers for national unity, peace and sustainable development.

In a statement marking the commencement of the sacred seasons observed by Muslims and Christians, Ike described the twin periods of fasting and reflection as a defining moment for moral rededication and collective national rebirth.

She said that beyond abstinence from food and other pleasures, Ramadan and Lent symbolise deep spiritual discipline, sacrifice and compassion for the less privileged — virtues she noted are urgently needed in Nigeria’s current socio-economic climate.

According to her, the overlapping observance of the two holy seasons underscores the shared values between the Islamic and Christian faiths and offers a powerful message of harmony in diversity.

“The lessons of self-restraint, forgiveness, charity and love for one another must not end with the season. They should shape our daily interactions and national outlook,” she stated.

The NUJ FCT Chairman stressed that as opinion moulders and gatekeepers of information, journalists have a responsibility to promote messages that unite rather than divide the country.

She reaffirmed the council’s commitment to ethical journalism, fairness and accuracy in reportage, particularly during sensitive religious periods.

Ike further urged political leaders, community heads and citizens alike to reflect on their roles in nation-building and work towards strengthening democratic institutions and peaceful coexistence.

She concluded by wishing Muslim and Christian faithful a spiritually enriching Ramadan and Lenten season, expressing hope that the prayers and sacrifices offered during the period would translate into tangible progress and renewed hope for Nigeria.
