NAWOJ, CEE-HOPE Intensify Push to Restore Dignity, Rights of Domestic Workers in Nigeria

CEE-HOPE, in collaboration with the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Zone D, today convened a consultative meeting with media practitioners in Abuja as part of ongoing efforts to advance the Domestic Workers’ Rights Campaign.

Speaking at the meeting, the Founder and Executive Director of CEE-HOPE, Betty Abah, described domestic workers as “one of the most violated groups in Nigeria,” noting that many face abuse, exploitation, and denial of justice. She stressed the urgent need for the National Assembly to fast-track the passage of the bill on the documentation and rights of domestic workers, which she said would offer long-overdue legal protection.

Also speaking, the Vice President of NAWOJ Zone D, Mrs. Chizoba Ogbeche, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to driving the campaign, adding that NAWOJ chapters across the North Central states and the Federal Capital Territory will continue to amplify the advocacy. She pledged sustained media engagement to ensure domestic workers are accorded dignity and respect.

The one-day consultative meeting examined critical issues affecting domestic workers and emphasized the importance of strong media partnership in advancing their human and labour rights. Discussions also highlighted the potential for unionisation and integrating domestic workers into the mainstream labour movement in Nigeria, among other pressing concerns.
