German Embassy, NAWOJ to Train 200 Women Journalists Ahead of 2026 IWD

The German Embassy in Nigeria is partnering with the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, to train 200 women journalists in capacity building, leadership development, investigative reporting, and climate change communication.

The initiative forms part of activities marking the 2026 International Women’s Day.

The partnership was confirmed during a courtesy visit by the NAWOJ FCT Chairperson, Comrade Bassey Ita-Ikpang, and members of her executive to the German Ambassador in Abuja on Wednesday.

Comrade Ita-Ikpang said the visit was aimed at seeking collaboration and support from the embassy for training programmes on investigative journalism, gender equality, democratic governance, climate reporting, and other essential areas. She noted that empowering women journalists through such training would enhance their professional competence and broaden opportunities for leadership.

“Training and including women in leadership positions helps shape the nation. When you train a woman, you train a community,” she said.

In his response, the Embassy’s Head of Press and Political Affairs, Mr. Felix Haala, assured NAWOJ of the embassy’s commitment to supporting the initiative with relevant tools and technical expertise. He added that an external expert would be provided to lead the leadership sessions and help refine the association’s programme ideas.

“I am happy to be part of this initiative and the outlined programmes, and I will be available to engage with the women directly,” he said.

The Embassy further expressed willingness to support NAWOJ FCT in other activities lined up for the 2026 International Women’s Day.
