TMV Commends UBEC for Releasing ₦100bn Unaccessed Grants, Hails Tinubu's Education Reforms

The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) has commended the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for mobilising and disbursing ₦100 billion in previously unaccessed matching grants to states, describing the move as a major milestone in advancing basic education across Nigeria.

The group noted that the intervention came despite the failure of many state governments to provide the required counterpart funding needed to access the grants for improving primary and junior secondary education.

In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi, and Secretary, Segun Ogedengbe, TMV said the initiative aligns with UBEC's 2025–2031 Strategic Blueprint, which is focused on delivering measurable improvements in the nation's basic education sector.

According to the statement, UBEC Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, recently highlighted key achievements of the commission during a media briefing in Abuja. These include the construction of 4,600 classrooms, renovation of more than 6,100 classrooms, provision of 2,780 toilet facilities and 678 boreholes, as well as the distribution of over 334,000 pieces of school furniture nationwide.

TMV described the accomplishments as evidence of the impact of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu's administration, particularly the successful mobilisation of previously unaccessed matching grants for states.

The group explained that the grants ordinarily require states to contribute 40 per cent counterpart funding before accessing the Federal Government's contribution, but many states had, over the years, failed to meet this obligation.

"It is gratifying that under the present administration, the commission has mobilised as much as ₦100 billion in unaccessed grants, which we believe will significantly enhance the delivery of quality basic education across the country," the statement said.

TMV also praised the institutional reforms introduced at UBEC, noting that they have strengthened transparency, project monitoring and data-driven decision-making within the commission.

The group further commended the Federal Government for releasing the funds despite the inability of some beneficiary states to fulfil their counterpart funding obligations, describing the decision as unprecedented and a clear demonstration of the Tinubu administration's commitment to the future of Nigerian children.

According to TMV, the release of the grants underscores the administration's resolve to ensure that no child is denied access to quality basic education because of bureaucratic or financial constraints at the state level.
