NIMC, NIPOST Partner to Integrate National Identity Database with Digital Postcode System
ABUJA – The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) have entered into a strategic partnership to integrate Nigeria's National Identity Database with the country's digital postcode system, a landmark initiative aimed at enhancing public service delivery, digital governance and economic inclusion.
The partnership was announced on Friday at a joint press conference in Abuja, where both agencies unveiled plans to establish a unified framework linking the National Identification Number (NIN) with verified address data. The initiative is expected to enable government institutions, businesses and service providers to identify and locate Nigerians more accurately and efficiently.
Officials from both agencies said the collaboration would strengthen Nigeria's digital infrastructure by combining trusted identity management with reliable location data, thereby improving access to healthcare, education, financial services, logistics, emergency response, e-commerce and other essential services.
The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, described the partnership as a significant milestone in Nigeria's digital transformation journey, noting that it reflects a shared commitment to building a citizen-centred digital ecosystem.
She explained that the initiative follows the enactment of the NIMC Act 2026, which expanded the Commission's mandate to manage Nigeria's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for identity and serve as the Root Certification Authority for the National Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).
According to her, the new legal framework provides a secure foundation for digital identity, trusted authentication, electronic signatures, digital transactions and seamless access to government services.
Coker-Odusote said the integration of identity and location data is critical to effective governance.
«"While the National Identification Number establishes who a person is, the postcode system identifies where the person can be reached. Bringing both together is essential for efficient governance and service delivery."»
She noted that linking the National Identity Database with the digital postcode system would improve the targeting of government programmes, strengthen transparency, enhance data-driven planning and promote more efficient service delivery.
The NIMC boss disclosed that technical teams from both organisations have already commenced integrating postcode retrieval into NIMC's NINAuth platform. Once completed, Nigerians will be able to verify their addresses and retrieve official postcodes through the same trusted identity platform.
She further stressed that collaboration among government institutions is indispensable to achieving Nigeria's digital transformation agenda.
«"No single institution can build a resilient digital economy in isolation. Success depends on partnerships that leverage each institution's comparative advantage to deliver seamless, secure and citizen-centred services."»
Coker-Odusote described NIPOST as a strategic partner because of its nationwide presence and expertise in national addressing infrastructure, adding that the collaboration supports President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda by advancing digital innovation, economic inclusion and improved public service delivery.
Also speaking, the Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, said the partnership represents more than cooperation between two government agencies, describing it as the foundation for a smarter and more connected Nigeria.
According to her, every modern economy depends on two essential capabilities—knowing who people are and knowing where they are.
She explained that while identity enables citizens to access services, the postcode system provides the location intelligence required for efficient logistics, planning, emergency response, commerce and effective government interventions.
«"The collaboration between NIMC and NIPOST is about creating the infrastructure that enables inclusion, trust, accessibility and economic participation for every Nigerian."»
Odeyemi said the initiative aligns with NIPOST's ongoing transformation into a modern infrastructure institution that connects citizens with government services, businesses with customers and communities with economic opportunities.
She described the National Digital Postcode initiative as one of the agency's flagship priorities, noting that postal institutions around the world are increasingly serving as critical enablers of digital inclusion, logistics, commerce and national addressing systems.
She assured Nigerians that the partnership would be implemented with strict adherence to privacy, data security, institutional accountability and good governance.
«"This initiative is not merely about integrating databases. It is about ensuring that every Nigerian can be identified, located, reached and served."»
Both agencies expressed confidence that the partnership will deepen interoperability across government institutions, strengthen Nigeria's Digital Public Infrastructure and accelerate the country's transition to a more efficient, secure and inclusive digital economy.
