TCN Commissions New 150MVA Transformer at Afam IV Transmission Substation

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Port Harcourt Region, has successfully commissioned a new 150MVA, 330/132/33kV power transformer at its Afam IV Transmission Substation in Rivers State.

The transformer was commissioned on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, in another major step towards strengthening Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure and improving electricity supply to consumers.

The addition of the new transformer has doubled the substation’s transformation capacity from 120MVA to 240MVA, significantly increasing its capacity to transmit bulk electricity to the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) load centre.

With the increased transmission capacity, PHEDC will be able to off-take more bulk electricity from the transmission network for onward distribution to electricity consumers across Port Harcourt metropolis and its environs.

The project is expected to help ease transmission constraints, improve the reliability of electricity supply and support growing electricity demand in the Port Harcourt axis.

The Afam IV transformer project is part of the ongoing TCN-World Bank power projects aimed at expanding and strengthening Nigeria’s electricity transmission network and enhancing the nation’s capacity to deliver reliable power to electricity distribution load centres.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to implementing strategic projects that will improve grid capacity, strengthen system reliability and support the nation’s economic development.
