Nigerian Airways Retirees Seek PTAD’s Intervention Over Pension Matters

The Executive Secretary of the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD), Mrs. Tolulope Odunaiya, on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, met with representatives of the Association of Airways Retired Workers of Nigeria (AARWN) to deliberate on longstanding pension-related issues affecting retirees of the defunct Nigerian Airways.

The meeting focused primarily on the proposed onboarding of Nigerian Airways pensioners onto the pension payroll. The AARWN delegation was led by its Chairman, Mr. Onuh Stephen, alongside Mr. Ahmed Sulu Gambari, who both articulated the collective concerns and expectations of the retired workers.

Responding to the concerns raised, the Executive Secretary acknowledged the challenges faced by the retirees and expressed empathy with their situation. She reaffirmed PTAD’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare and dignity of pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme.

Mrs. Odunaiya, however, clarified that PTAD operates strictly within its statutory mandate and therefore lacks the authority to verify or onboard pensioners without formal directives from the appropriate authorities.

She further advised the Association to sustain its ongoing engagement with relevant authorities to secure the necessary approvals for the onboarding of its members who were bona fide pensioners of the defunct Nigerian Airways prior to its liquidation, onto the pension payroll.

The meeting ended with assurances of continued dialogue and cooperation in pursuit of a sustainable resolution to the retirees’ concerns.
