Ikpea Defends Electoral Reforms, Backs State Police, Calls for Stronger Global Security Ties

Senator Joseph Ikpea, representing Edo Central Senatorial District, has defended recent electoral reforms by the National Assembly, thrown his weight behind the establishment of state police, and called for deeper international collaboration to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja, the lawmaker said Nigeria’s complex security landscape demands both bold domestic reforms and responsible global partnerships. He commended the Federal Government for strengthening security cooperation with the United States of America, noting that even global powers depend on strategic alliances in times of crisis.

Citing the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, Ikpea said modern conflicts underscore the importance of international support systems. According to him, Nigeria must not hesitate to seek necessary assistance in confronting terrorism and other unconventional threats.

He also cautioned against profiling religious groups, stressing that extremist elements operating under religious identities do not represent the peaceful majority of Nigerian Muslims. Religion, he said, must never be weaponized to justify violence or criminality.

Electoral Act Amendment

Addressing controversy surrounding amendments to the Electoral Act, Ikpea defended the Senate’s decision to retain both electronic transmission and manual backup of election results.

While acknowledging that electronic systems improve transparency and speed, he warned that no technology is immune to glitches or cyber threats. The dual system, he explained, guarantees inclusivity for areas with poor network coverage and provides a safeguard in the event of technical disruptions.

“No credible system operates without a backup,” he said, describing the amendment as pragmatic and tailored to Nigeria’s realities.

Edo Central Erosion Crisis

On ecological concerns, the senator highlighted renewed efforts to address erosion and environmental degradation affecting communities in Edo Central. Although similar motions had been raised previously, he assured constituents that stronger follow-up with relevant federal agencies is underway to ensure tangible results.

He expressed optimism that improved coordination between lawmakers and federal institutions would deliver sustainable solutions.

Politics and Governance

With election season approaching, Ikpea dismissed suggestions that political activities would derail legislative responsibilities. He maintained that governance remains paramount and noted that the National Assembly retains the capacity to reconvene at any time to address urgent national issues.

Backing State Police

Reiterating his stance on constitutional reform, Ikpea advocated for the creation of state police, arguing that decentralized security structures would enhance intelligence gathering, strengthen community protection, and improve rapid response to threats.

He urged Nigerians to remain patient and supportive of ongoing reforms, emphasizing that rebuilding institutions, stabilizing the economy, and restoring national security require unity, resilience, and sustained commitment.
