FRSC INTERCEPTS SUSPECTED CHILD TRAFFICKING IN NYANYA, HANDS OVER 17 VICTIMS TO POLICE FOR INVESTIGATION

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has again demonstrated its vigilance, operational efficiency, and commitment to national safety, child protection, and inter-agency collaboration with the successful interception of a suspected child trafficking attempt in Nyanya, Abuja.

On Saturday, 17 January 2026, the afternoon patrol team of the Nyanya Unit Command intercepted a white Sharon vehicle with registration number SHD 253 YU at the Building Materials axis of Nyanya. The vehicle, driven by Mr. Nanle John (36), was traveling from Shendam, Plateau State, to Kaiama LGA, Kwara State.

The patrol team became suspicious after observing an unusually large number of occupants—seventeen (17) young boys and girls cramped inside the vehicle, including two minors hidden in the boot. Their discovery raised immediate concerns of possible human trafficking.

The vehicle was swiftly impounded, and the Unit Commander was notified. Preliminary questioning of the driver produced unsatisfactory explanations, prompting escalation to the relevant security authorities. In line with established protocols, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mararaba Division, was contacted, and the driver, vehicle, and all 17 children were formally handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation.

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Nasarawa State Command, CP Shetima Jauro Mohamed, directed that the rescued children be taken into protective custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Lafia, while ordering a comprehensive investigation to unravel any trafficking network connected to the case.

Reacting to the development, the Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed, stated that the interception reinforces the fact that the FRSC is not only responsible for traffic management but for protecting lives in every possible sense. He noted that FRSC personnel are trained to remain vigilant, humane, and responsive to suspicious activities on the highways.

The Corps Marshal also emphasized that while the FRSC does not have statutory powers to investigate human trafficking, its mandate to safeguard lives, detect irregularities, and promptly notify relevant agencies was professionally executed.

The Corps commends the swift intervention of the Nigeria Police Force and reassures the public of its unwavering commitment to vigilance, professionalism, and strengthened inter-agency cooperation toward ensuring safety on Nigeria’s highways.
