BENIN TOLL GATE ATTACK: CORPS MARSHAL COMMENDS ARMY, POLICE FOR SWIFT RESPONSE; ORDERS IMMEDIATE PROBE

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, mni, has expressed profound appreciation to the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force for their swift and decisive intervention following a mob attack on the RS5.12 Benin Toll Gate Unit Command Office along the Benin–Lagos Expressway on Thursday, 19 February 2026.

The unfortunate incident occurred in the aftermath of a crash rescue operation around the Benin Toll Gate axis, where two trucks reportedly collided, resulting in the death of one of the drivers and critical injuries to FRSC personnel.

Tragically, one of the injured officers later succumbed despite receiving urgent medical attention. In the wake of the crash, an irate mob besieged and vandalised the Unit Command formation. However, the prompt response of security agencies helped to restore order and prevent further escalation.

The Corps Marshal strongly condemned the attack on the personnel and facilities of the Corps, describing it as deeply regrettable and unacceptable. He reiterated that FRSC operatives were lawfully on duty, carrying out their statutory responsibility to save lives when the tragic incident occurred.

While commiserating with the family of the deceased driver, the fallen officer, and the entire FRSC workforce, the Corps Marshal has directed a comprehensive investigation into both the immediate and remote causes of the crash, as well as the circumstances that culminated in the mob action.

He assured the public that anyone found culpable will be brought to justice in accordance with the law.

Reaffirming the Corps’ unwavering commitment to its mandate of ensuring safer roads for all Nigerians, the Corps Marshal called on members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and supportive of FRSC operations at all times.
