TMSG Defends Aso Rock Solar Project, Counters Dino Melaye's Criticism

The Tinubu Media Support Group (TMSG) has responded to comments by former federal lawmaker, Dino Melaye, on the Federal Government's decision to install a solar power system at the Presidential Villa, describing the project as a cost-saving and energy-efficient initiative.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Emeka Nwankpa, and Secretary, Dapo Okubanjo, the group said the solar project should be viewed within the broader context of reducing the cost of powering the State House and promoting cleaner energy.

According to the group, annual electricity expenses at the Presidential Villa had risen significantly over the years, with additional costs incurred through the maintenance and fueling of power generators.

TMSG noted that the Permanent Secretary of the State House, Temitope Fashola, had earlier explained during a budget defence session that the solar project would reduce dependence on ageing generating equipment and lower long-term energy costs. It also recalled that the State House Clinic has operated on solar power since May last year as part of ongoing cost-saving measures.

The group argued that the proposed solar project represents a one-time investment that could generate long-term savings while allowing electricity previously allocated to the Presidential Villa to remain available on the national grid for other consumers in the Federal Capital Territory.

Addressing concerns that the project signals a lack of commitment to improving electricity supply nationwide, TMSG maintained that the Federal Government continues to pursue reforms in the power sector.

It cited the implementation of electricity sector reforms that enable greater participation by subnational governments, the continued execution of the Presidential Power Initiative, efforts to settle outstanding obligations to electricity generation companies, and the rollout of smart meters to reduce estimated billing.

The group also noted that the solar initiative aligns with Nigeria's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2060 and supports the ongoing National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative aimed at expanding renewable energy use across Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
