TCN DECLARES FORCE MAJEURE ON 132KV BIRNIN KEBBI–NIAMEY TRANSMISSION LINE OVER TOWER COLLAPSE

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has declared Force Majeure on the 132kV Birnin Kebbi–Niamey transmission line following the collapse of three transmission towers along the line.

The incident occurred on 26 August 2026 at about 5:38 p.m., when the 132kV Birnin Kebbi–Niamey transmission line tripped. A trial reclosure was subsequently attempted at 6:03 p.m., but the line tripped instantly.

Following the incident, TCN linesmen immediately commenced a fault-finding patrol to identify the cause of the outage. During the patrol, they discovered that transmission towers T109, T110 and T111 had collapsed at Chibike Village.

Preliminary assessment indicates that the towers collapsed as a result of heavy rainfall and strong winds experienced in the area.

The incident has affected the transmission of bulk electricity supply to Niamey, Niger Republic, through the affected line.

TCN has mobilised personnel, equipment and other necessary resources to the site to commence rehabilitation works. The company is making every effort to expedite the reconstruction of the collapsed towers and restore the transmission line to service as soon as possible.

TCN regrets the inconvenience this incident may cause to its customers in Niamey and assures all stakeholders that every effort is being made to restore normal bulk power transmission promptly.
