NAWOJ Secures Land for National Secretariat, Deepens Collaboration with NUJ

The Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has recorded a major institutional milestone with the acquisition of land for its permanent National Secretariat, a development set to strengthen the association’s long-term stability and operations.

The announcement was made during a courtesy visit by the NAWOJ National Executive, led by its National Chairperson, Aisha Ibrahim, to the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Alhassan Yahaya.

Addressing the NUJ leadership, Ibrahim disclosed that NAWOJ has successfully secured the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) for the allocated land in the Federal Capital Territory, having fulfilled all statutory requirements and documentation processes. These included formal authorization, submission of minutes and attendance from the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting approving the acquisition, alongside necessary corporate and identification documents.

She explained that the NEC had duly mandated the leadership to proceed with the process, which was completed despite bureaucratic hurdles through coordinated internal efforts and timely interventions. According to her, a total of ₦1,597,000 was expended to secure the C of O, marking the successful conclusion of the process.

The NAWOJ Chairperson expressed appreciation to stakeholders whose support facilitated engagement with relevant authorities and ensured a smooth outcome.

Describing the development as a strategic investment, Ibrahim noted that the acquisition underscores NAWOJ’s commitment to institutional growth and the welfare of its members nationwide. She added that plans are already in motion to commence development on the site, with the aim of delivering a functional secretariat within the shortest possible timeframe.

She also acknowledged the support of the NUJ President, particularly his earlier intervention that helped NAWOJ retain its National Secretariat through assistance with rent obligations during a critical period.

In his remarks, Yahaya commended NAWOJ for what he described as a landmark achievement, noting that securing land and obtaining a Certificate of Occupancy represents a lasting legacy. He congratulated the leadership and women journalists across Nigeria, reaffirming NUJ’s commitment to sustained collaboration and support.

He further urged the association to expedite development on the site and emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships in driving sustainable growth within the media profession.

The visit reinforced the strong institutional relationship between NAWOJ and NUJ, highlighting a shared commitment to advancing the welfare, unity, and professional development of journalists in Nigeria.
