Grace Ike Calls for Protection of Workers Amid Rising Hardship

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has extended warm felicitations to journalists and workers across the Federal Capital Territory on the occasion of the 2026 Workers’ Day.

Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Insecurity and Poverty: Bane of Decent Work,” Ike described it as a clear representation of the harsh realities facing Nigerian workers, noting that insecurity and economic hardship continue to threaten livelihoods, reduce productivity, and undermine the dignity of labour.

She observed that journalists in the FCT operate under difficult and often risky conditions, yet remain committed to informing the public and holding authorities accountable. She commended members of the NUJ FCT Council for their resilience, courage, and dedication to ethical journalism.

According to her, persistent insecurity not only endangers lives but also limits access to information and hinders the effective discharge of journalists’ duties. She added that rising poverty and economic pressures have further weakened workers’ welfare and morale, calling for urgent and sustained intervention.

The NUJ FCT Chairman urged governments at all levels to strengthen security and implement practical policies aimed at reducing poverty and expanding economic opportunities. She stressed that creating a safe and enabling environment is essential for achieving decent work.

Ike also called on media organisations and employers to prioritise the welfare of journalists through fair remuneration, improved working conditions, insurance coverage, and continuous professional development.

She further emphasised the need for stronger unity within the union, urging members to remain steadfast in advocating for their rights, safety, and dignity while upholding professionalism and accountability.

Encouraging journalists and workers to stay resilient, Ike expressed optimism that collective effort and commitment would help build a safer, more equitable, and prosperous society.
