NASS Unveils Ultra-Modern Newsroom, Signals Bold Shift in Legislative Transparency

The National Assembly of Nigeria has commissioned a state-of-the-art newsroom in a strategic move aimed at deepening transparency, enhancing institutional efficiency, and modernising legislative communication.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Tuesday, the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, described the facility as far more than a structural upgrade, calling it a symbol of renewed commitment to professionalism, excellence, and proactive public engagement.

According to Ogunlana, the newsroom represents a deliberate investment in strengthening information management, improving documentation of legislative proceedings, and positioning the Assembly to communicate its activities with greater credibility and openness.

“In an era where communication defines credibility, this facility positions the National Assembly to carry out its responsibilities with professionalism and transparency,” he stated.

He noted that under his leadership, conscious efforts have been made to improve service delivery and staff welfare, emphasising that the workforce remains the backbone of the institution. Providing modern tools and a conducive work environment, he said, is central to boosting productivity and institutional output.

The Clerk further explained that the newsroom forms part of a broader reform agenda aimed at repositioning the National Assembly as a centre of national pride and institutional excellence. He referenced several newly completed and ongoing infrastructural projects within the complex as evidence of a comprehensive transformation drive.

Underscoring the importance of maintenance culture, Ogunlana recalled a time when the National Assembly Printing Press ranked among the most sophisticated in the country, attracting major government printing contracts. He lamented its decline due to poor maintenance and urged stakeholders to embrace collective responsibility in safeguarding public assets.

“Maintenance is not the responsibility of management alone. It is a shared duty. Preserving our facilities means preserving our progress,” he emphasised.

In his welcome address, Alli Umoru, Permanent Secretary of the Directorate of Research and Information, described the newsroom as a strategic communication hub designed to enable real-time monitoring of legislative activities, combat misinformation, strengthen public trust, and enhance archiving and documentation processes.

He added that the facility will also serve as a training centre for Information Officers, fostering professional development and intellectual engagement. The Directorate, he noted, has consistently contributed to institutional growth through key publications such as the National Assembly Guide and the compilation of historic legislative documents, including presidential budget speeches and stakeholder submissions on reform bills.

The ceremony attracted senior management staff, legislators, Permanent Secretaries, Clerks of both chambers, Heads of Departments, and other invited guests, marking what officials described as a significant milestone in the modernisation of legislative communication in Nigeria.

The new facility is expected to elevate the public image of the National Assembly while ensuring more accurate, timely, and professional dissemination of information to citizens nationwide.
