IGP Disu Commends FCT Journalists, Calls for Stronger Police–Media Partnership

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Ridwan Disu, has commended journalists in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for their role in keeping the public informed and contributing to national development.

Speaking at the congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council in Abuja on Saturday, the IGP described his relationship with the media as one built on mutual respect, professionalism, and shared responsibility.

Disu stressed that journalists are professionals who deserve dignity and recognition, noting that the media plays a vital role in shaping public discourse and strengthening democratic governance.

“I have always had a respectful and mutually beneficial relationship with journalists. They are professionals who deserve respect and should never be treated as beggars,” he said.

The police chief also called for stronger collaboration between the police and the media, emphasizing that a constructive partnership would help build public trust and enhance effective communication on security issues.

He further urged both police officers and journalists to uphold professionalism and responsible conduct in the discharge of their duties, noting that positive conduct leaves lasting impressions on society.

In her response, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Grace Ike, congratulated the new IGP on his appointment, describing him as a long-standing friend of the media.

She expressed confidence in his leadership and assured him of the council’s readiness to collaborate with the police in ensuring objective and responsible reporting of security matters.

Ike also disclosed that the IGP would be invited as a special guest to the council’s 2026 Press Week celebration.
