FRSC Sets Record Straight: Seven Killed in Kano Crash, Not 30

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has clarified reports surrounding the recent road traffic crash in Kano State, confirming that seven (7) persons lost their lives in the incident, contrary to media reports claiming 30 fatalities.

The Corps explained that the casualty figure was established through on-the-spot assessment and verified rescue operations conducted by its operatives. It therefore urged the public and media organisations to rely on officially confirmed information in order to avoid misinformation and unnecessary public anxiety.

The fatal crash occurred on Sunday, 8 February 2026, at about 8:33 a.m. along Hadejia Road, Kwanar Danja, in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State. It involved a commercial DAF trailer with registration number KTG 467 YG, conveying 105 passengers.

Out of the 105 persons involved in the crash, 70 victims—comprising 55 adult males and 15 male children—sustained varying degrees of injuries, while seven adult males lost their lives. Thirty (30) other passengers were rescued by the FRSC emergency rescue team without injuries.

Preliminary investigations by the Corps attributed the cause of the crash to speed violation, which led to loss of control (SPV/LOC).

Reacting to the incident, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed, described speeding as one of the deadliest traffic violations and warned motorists against turning highways into death traps.

He stated that once a driver exceeds the prescribed speed limit, vehicle control is compromised, reaction time is reduced, and the chances of survival in the event of a crash become minimal. He stressed that no journey is worth the loss of innocent lives.

According to him, the magnitude of casualties recorded in a single crash is a clear manifestation of the devastating consequences of reckless driving, noting that vehicles driven at excessive speed become lethal weapons capable of wiping out entire families within seconds.

The Corps Marshal further warned that the FRSC will continue to intensify enforcement operations nationwide, stressing that motorists who flout speed regulations will face the full weight of the law without exception.

In light of the foregoing, the Corps called on all road users—especially commercial drivers—to obey speed limits, drive responsibly, and prioritise safety over haste. It noted that the pain of losing loved ones to preventable road crashes is a burden no family should bear, emphasising that speed limits are designed to save lives and must not be ignored.
