FRSC CONFIRMS FATAL CRASH THAT CLAIMED 12 LIVES AT GADA BIYU ALONG YANGOJI–ABUJA CORRIDOR

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed a fatal multiple-vehicle crash that claimed twelve (12) lives at about 11:45 a.m. on Sunday, 11 January 2026, at Gada Biyu along the Yangoji–Abuja (YGJ–ABJ) corridor.

The crash involved four vehicles: a commercial trailer transporting coal, a commercial bus, and two commercial cars. Preliminary findings indicate that speed violation and dangerous driving were the likely causes. According to the FRSC, the trailer driver was travelling far above the legally prescribed speed limit, lost control, and rammed into parked vehicles, triggering the deadly collision.

A total of 18 people were involved—8 adult males, 4 adult females, 2 male children, and 4 female children. Five victims died on the spot, while seven others who were rescued and taken to the hospital later died from their injuries, bringing the death toll to twelve. Three additional victims suffered varying injuries, including fractures, cuts, and head trauma, and are currently receiving treatment.

FRSC operatives received the distress call at 11:47 a.m. and arrived at the scene within seven minutes. The injured were evacuated to Abaji General Hospital, while the remains of the deceased were released to their families for burial. The Motor Traffic Division (MTD) in Kwali has taken over the investigation.

Beyond rescue efforts, the Corps also cleared the roadway to restore free traffic flow and prevent secondary crashes along the busy route.

Reacting to the incident, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, commiserated with the bereaved families and described the crash as tragic and completely avoidable. He warned motorists—especially drivers of heavy-duty vehicles—to desist from speeding and reckless driving, stressing that strict compliance with traffic regulations is essential to saving lives.

The Corps Marshal reaffirmed FRSC’s commitment to intensified enforcement, public education, and collaboration with stakeholders to reduce road traffic crashes and improve safety across Nigerian roads.
