TCN Expands Alausa Transmission Capacity by 70MVA, Targets Improved Power Supply to 70,000 Residents

LAGOS, August 18, 2026 — The Federal Government has commissioned a new 1x100MVA, 132/33kV power transformer at the Alausa Transmission Substation in Lagos State, increasing the facility’s total transmission capacity from 135MVA to 205MVA.

The project, executed by Shanghai Electric Group Company Limited under a World Bank-funded initiative, is expected to strengthen electricity supply to Alausa and surrounding communities while increasing the volume of bulk power available to the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC).

The Honourable Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Tegbe, who officially commissioned the transformer on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, said the project represents a strategic investment in one of Lagos State’s most economically significant areas.

According to him, the Alausa axis accommodates government institutions, commercial establishments, industries, residential communities, markets and other economic activities that depend heavily on reliable electricity.

Transformer upgrade increases capacity by 70MVA

The Alausa 132/33kV Transmission Substation previously had three transformers — 60MVA, 45MVA and 30MVA — with a combined installed capacity of 135MVA.

The newly commissioned 100MVA transformer replaces the existing 30MVA unit, increasing the substation’s total capacity to 205MVA, equivalent to approximately 164MW.

Minister Tegbe said the intervention has also increased the quantum of bulk power available to IKEDC by 80MW for onward delivery to electricity consumers within its franchise area.

He noted that the additional capacity goes beyond technical figures, as it has the potential to support businesses, industries, hospitals, schools, offices, markets, technology companies, artisans and households whose activities depend on electricity.

TCN: Project to improve supply to 70,000 residents

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, said the project demonstrates the Federal Government’s and TCN’s commitment to expanding and strengthening Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure.

Abdulaziz said the transformer upgrade would, upon energisation, provide more stable and reliable electricity to at least 70,000 residents in Alausa and its environs through IKEDC.

He added that the project would also increase TCN’s ability to wheel bulk power to distribution load centres, thereby contributing to improved grid stability and enhanced electricity delivery to consumers nationwide.

According to the TCN boss, the project is a demonstration of the company’s resolve to build and sustain a robust transmission network capable of meeting Nigeria’s growing electricity needs.

FG targets transmission bottlenecks

The Minister said the Alausa project is part of a wider Federal Government strategy to address transmission constraints across the country.

He explained that the government’s approach is to identify bottlenecks, invest in critical infrastructure, remove constraints and unlock additional transmission capacity.

“Where transmission infrastructure is constraining available power, we will strengthen transmission. Where substations require additional capacity, we will expand them. Where ageing equipment threatens reliability, we will progressively rehabilitate or replace it,” Tegbe stated.

He said the government would also prioritise investments in industrial and commercial corridors where stronger electricity infrastructure can stimulate economic activity.

Minister commends TCN, NISO, IKEDC and project partners

Tegbe commended TCN for undertaking the capacity upgrade and recognised the contribution of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) towards the coordinated, secure and efficient operation of the electricity system.

He also acknowledged IKEDC’s responsibility to translate the additional bulk power capacity into improved service for electricity consumers.

The Minister commended Shanghai Electric Group Company Limited for executing the project and appreciated the World Bank and other development and technical partners for their support.

He also congratulated the Lagos State Government, particularly Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for its partnership and commitment to development.

TCN appreciates Tinubu, Power Minister and stakeholders

In his welcome address, Abdulaziz expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Honourable Minister of Power, the World Bank, Lagos State Government, contractors, engineers and other stakeholders whose contributions facilitated the completion of the project.

He said the project aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu Administration and reflects the government’s commitment to systematic and steady progress in Nigeria’s power sector.

The commissioning of the Alausa transformer is expected to strengthen the transmission network in Lagos, improve bulk power availability to IKEDC and support more reliable electricity supply to consumers.

The Minister subsequently formally commissioned the 1x100MVA, 132/33kV transformer and its associated facilities, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to continued investment across Nigeria’s electricity value chain.

The development marks another step in the ongoing effort to expand transmission capacity, improve grid reliability and unlock the economic potential of Nigeria’s power sector.
