TCN Clears Misinformation on EKEDC Outage Publication, Explains Lekki Transformer Incident
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has dismissed as inaccurate claims by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) regarding an outage incident at the Lekki Transmission Substation on August 26, 2026.
TCN, in a clarification issued on the incident, said contrary to EKEDC’s publication that its T11 transformer tripped unexpectedly and was awaiting inspection, the actual incident involved the simultaneous tripping of EKEDC’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders at about 4:34 a.m. on August 26.
According to TCN, the feeders tripped due to overcurrent and earth fault, which subsequently resulted in the inter-tripping of the primary and secondary breakers of TCN’s TR1 60MVA, 132/33kV transformer. The incident was accompanied by a heavy bang and smoke.
TCN said its maintenance crew responded promptly to the incident and rehabilitated the damaged secondary breaker, while both the primary and secondary breakers were restored later the same day.
However, the transmission company explained that when EKEDC subsequently attempted a trial closure of its Oniru feeder, the same relay indications reappeared, causing another trip and necessitating further corrective work.
TCN therefore clarified that there was no outage on its T11 transformer, contrary to the claim attributed to EKEDC.
It stressed that the incident was strictly associated with EKEDC’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders, adding that its technical team has remained on-site and is working assiduously to resolve the fault and restore normal electricity supply as quickly as possible.
The transmission company expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to electricity customers affected by the incident and assured them that efforts are ongoing to restore supply within the shortest possible time.
TCN reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure and putting in place a more robust and reliable transmission network capable of supporting improved electricity supply across the country.
