Senate Demands Urgent Security Overhaul After Fresh Killings in Benue

The Nigerian Senate has called for swift and decisive measures to stem the wave of violence in Benue State following the recent killings in Ankpali-Edikwu, Apa Local Government Area.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by the Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, who drew attention to the April 12, 2026 attack in which several residents were reportedly killed by suspected armed herdsmen.

Presenting the motion during plenary, Moro described the incident as part of a troubling pattern of recurring violence across rural communities in Benue State. He noted that the persistent attacks have led to significant loss of lives, destruction of property, and the displacement of residents.

Lawmakers expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation, warning that the continued attacks have instilled fear among residents, disrupted farming activities, and threatened food security in a state widely regarded as Nigeria’s “Food Basket.”

The Senate stressed that the scale and frequency of the violence raise serious concerns about the effectiveness of current security strategies, reiterating that safeguarding lives and property remains the primary responsibility of government.

While commending ongoing efforts by security agencies, the upper chamber called for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture, advocating more proactive, intelligence-driven, and community-based approaches.

Adopting the motion, the Senate urged the Federal Government to immediately deploy additional military and paramilitary personnel to affected areas, particularly Apa Local Government Area, to restore law and order.

It also tasked the Chief of Defence Staff, the Inspector General of Police, and other security heads to intensify coordinated operations aimed at apprehending the perpetrators and ensuring swift justice.

Furthermore, the Senate mandated its Committees on Defence, Army, Police Affairs, and National Security and Intelligence to investigate the recurring attacks in Benue South and across the state, with a view to proposing sustainable solutions.

Lawmakers also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant agencies to provide urgent humanitarian assistance, including relief materials and medical support, to affected communities.

As part of long-term solutions, the Senate emphasized the need for structured strategies to address farmer-herder conflicts, including the implementation of ranching policies, land reforms, and community-based conflict resolution mechanisms.

The chamber further recommended the immediate establishment of a Police Area Command and a military base in Apa and Agatu Local Government Areas, alongside improved funding for security agencies to enhance intelligence gathering and rapid response.

In addition, the Senate called on Governor Hyacinth Alia to intensify efforts toward fulfilling his constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property within the state.

In honour of the victims, lawmakers observed a minute of silence, reaffirming their commitment to ensuring justice and restoring lasting peace in the affected communities.
