Nwoko Assures Nigerians of Sustainable Malaria Elimination Efforts

Senator Ned Nwoko has assured Nigerians that the fight against malaria is gaining momentum, expressing confidence that ongoing efforts will lead to the eventual elimination of the disease across the country.

Speaking during a briefing with members of the National Assembly Press Corps, Nwoko described malaria as one of Nigeria's most persistent public health challenges, affecting millions of citizens annually regardless of social status.

According to the senator, while many families can afford prompt treatment whenever malaria strikes, countless low-income households are unable to access adequate healthcare, resulting in preventable deaths and prolonged suffering.

He emphasized that the proposed malaria eradication initiative would go beyond treatment by addressing environmental factors that contribute to the spread of the disease. The initiative, he said, would prioritize waste management, environmental sanitation, recycling, and fumigation programmes across communities.

Nwoko explained that establishing waste-to-energy and recycling plants across the country would not only help eliminate mosquito breeding sites but also create jobs, improve environmental conditions, and generate alternative sources of energy.

"This is not just a health intervention; it is an economic and environmental project that will benefit millions of Nigerians," he said.

The senator stressed that the campaign would be implemented nationwide, covering all 774 local government areas, with active participation from state governments, local communities, and relevant stakeholders.

He noted that the initiative is not designed as an Abuja-based project but as a national movement capable of transforming public health outcomes across the country. He added that successful implementation could serve as a model for other African nations facing similar malaria challenges.

Nwoko called on Nigerians to support the initiative, assuring them that practical and sustainable solutions are being developed to tackle malaria and improve the quality of life for citizens.

He expressed optimism that through collective commitment and strategic investment, Nigeria could significantly reduce malaria-related deaths and eventually eliminate the disease as a major public health threat.
