NIS DG, Shaibu Applauds NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel, Urges Stronger Commitment to Public Health

The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Philip Shaibu, has commended the leadership of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT, for championing a timely public health awareness campaign, describing the initiative as both necessary and impactful in the current national climate.

Shaibu gave the commendation while serving as Chairman of the 2026 Public Health Awareness and Wellbeing Conference, organised by the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel in collaboration with Alliance Hospital and Dr. Physiq Global Health & Wellness Centre. The event was held at the NUJ FCT Council Secretariat, Utako, Abuja.

Speaking on the conference theme, “Product Integrity, Regulatory Compliance, and Safety Standards: Tackling Critical Challenges in Product Safety, Patient Trust, and Public Health Protection,” Shaibu underscored the urgency of prioritising health in everyday life.

“Our health is critical, considering the realities we face today. It requires regular medical check-ups, as our mental health and overall wellbeing are essential to daily living. Whether we like it or not, health is wealth,” he stated.

He called on all partners involved in the initiative to sustain and deepen their collaboration, urging professional bodies such as the Nigerian Medical Association to emulate the Correspondents’ Chapel’s proactive approach.

“This initiative must not end here. It is important for the Nigerian Medical Association and other professional bodies to key into efforts like this and actively support public health advocacy,” he added.

Highlighting ongoing reforms at the NIS, Shaibu revealed that since assuming office, he has introduced a structured culture of fitness within the institute.

“At NIS, we dedicate at least one hour every Tuesday and Thursday to physical exercise to promote fitness and wellbeing,” he said.

He attributed his appointment to the foresight of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressing appreciation for what he described as visionary leadership in strategic appointments.

In a passionate appeal to public office holders, Shaibu cautioned against complacency and overdependence on government funding.

“Leaders must stop making excuses and begin to think creatively. We cannot always wait for government funding before taking necessary action,” he stressed.

The former Deputy Governor of Edo State disclosed a key milestone achieved under his leadership at the institute — the recruitment of a trained and certified medical doctor specialising in marathon events.

“It took about seven months to secure a specialist in marathon medicine. He only just returned to the country to resume duties with the institute,” he revealed.

According to him, these reforms have been implemented proactively, without waiting for budgetary releases.

“While the NIS budget has been approved, we have chosen not to delay impactful reforms. This approach reflects the proactive governance model I practised during my time in Edo State,” he explained.

Looking ahead, Shaibu expressed optimism about Nigeria’s performance in international sports competitions.

“I assure Nigerians that we will strengthen our participation in global sporting events, including future World Cups. When we focus on systems that work, the nation will ultimately benefit,” he said.

He also paid tribute to journalists, describing them as the backbone of democracy. Reflecting on his personal experience during Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle, he credited the media with playing a pivotal role in saving his life.

“Journalists are at the heart of our democracy. Their courage during critical times made a difference in my life. Without their intervention, I might not be here today,” he recounted.

Shaibu narrated how a media report exposing the continued detention of certain individuals led to his eventual release.

“That report changed my story. I might have been remembered as a fallen hero, but journalism gave me a second chance. That is why I remain proud to associate with the media,” he added.

The conference featured a keynote address by Dr. Abdulrahaman M. Huzaifa, while Dr. Christopher Otabor served as Guest Speaker. The event was hosted by Comrade Felix Ojo, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Correspondents’ Chapel, with Comrade Grace Ike, Chairman of NUJ FCT Council, as Chief Host.
