NIMC Strengthens Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure to Improve Service Delivery, Security

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has reaffirmed its commitment to building a secure, inclusive, and efficient Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) ecosystem to enhance governance, improve public service delivery, strengthen national security, and drive socio-economic development across Nigeria.

Speaking at a digital conference in Abuja themed “Building Africa’s Digital Foundations Together,” the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, represented by the Head of Infrastructure Technology and Identity Databases (IT/IDD), Mr. Sulaiman Falade, said the Commission is advancing Nigeria’s DPI agenda through strategic reforms, institutional partnerships, and the deployment of secure digital identity systems.

She noted that the National Identification Number (NIN) remains at the heart of the country’s digital transformation efforts, serving as a critical tool for identity verification, digital authentication, and seamless access to both government and private sector services.

According to her, the Presidential Directive of April 5, 2024, mandates all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to integrate and effectively utilize the NIN for data capture, identity verification, and biometric authentication across digital platforms.

“NIMC has established the necessary structures and mechanisms to ensure the successful implementation of this directive and to promote a harmonised digital identity ecosystem nationwide,” she stated.

Engr. Coker-Odusote reiterated the Federal Government’s vision of creating a unified, secure, and interoperable digital identity framework that promotes transparency, accountability, and easier access to services for citizens and residents.

She further highlighted NIMC’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s broader DPI architecture, noting that the Commission continues to support digital governance and national development through the integration of identity systems and the deployment of the National Public Key Infrastructure (nPKI).

According to her, these initiatives are enhancing trust in digital transactions, safeguarding citizens’ data, and fostering secure online interactions across sectors.

The NIMC boss called on stakeholders in both the public and private sectors to support the ongoing implementation of Nigeria’s digital identity ecosystem and related initiatives aimed at improving service delivery and strengthening the nation’s digital economy.

She reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to leveraging technology, innovation, and secure digital solutions to build a more connected, efficient, and resilient Nigeria.
