NIMC Reaffirms Commitment to Digital Public Infrastructure for Improved Service Delivery, Security

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has reiterated its commitment to building a robust and inclusive Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) ecosystem aimed at strengthening governance, improving public service delivery, enhancing national security, and driving socio-economic development across Nigeria.

The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, made the commitment at a digital conference themed "Building Africa's Digital Foundations Together" held in Abuja. She was represented at the event by the Head of Infrastructure Technology and Identity Databases (IT/IDD), Mr. Sulaiman Falade.

Speaking at the conference, Coker-Odusote said NIMC is spearheading Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure through strategic reforms, institutional collaboration, and the deployment of secure digital identity systems designed to support efficient service delivery for citizens and residents.

She noted that the National Identification Number (NIN) remains central to the country’s digital transformation agenda, serving as a critical tool for digital authentication, identity verification, and access to both government and private sector services.

According to her, the Federal Government’s Presidential Directive of April 5, 2024, mandates Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to ensure the effective use of the NIN in policies relating to data capture, identity verification, and biometric authentication across digital services.

She added that NIMC has already established the necessary structures to ensure the successful implementation of the directive nationwide.

The NIMC boss further emphasized the Federal Government’s vision of creating a unified, secure, and interoperable digital identity ecosystem that promotes transparency, accountability, and seamless access to services.

Coker-Odusote stated that, as a key component of Nigeria’s broader Digital Public Infrastructure framework, NIMC continues to play a leading role in advancing digital governance and supporting national development objectives. She explained that through the integration of digital identity systems and the deployment of the National Public Key Infrastructure (nPKI), Nigeria is strengthening trust in digital transactions, safeguarding citizens’ data, and promoting secure online interactions.

She called on stakeholders across both the public and private sectors to continue supporting the implementation of Nigeria’s digital identity ecosystem and other related initiatives aimed at improving service delivery outcomes for all Nigerians.

The NIMC Director-General reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to leveraging technology, innovation, and secure digital systems to build a more connected, efficient, and resilient nation.
