IWD:Women Empowerment is a Catalyst for Change:-Dr Binta  

In line with 2025 International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day that took place recently, the GreenLand News and SO TV organised a Media chat with Dr Binta Lawal Bagiwa, today in Abuja.

Dr Binta Lawal Bagiwa, is an Education Consultant, Nasarawa State University, said the theme for the 2025 International Women’s Day, #Accelerate Action – Step Forward in Solidarity for International Women’s Day, is a powerful call to unite and take bold steps toward gender equality. It emphasizes collective action, shared responsibility, and the urgency of dismantling barriers that hinder women's progress. This theme resonates deeply in areas such as women’s empowerment, health, decision-making, leadership, education, and training—all critical for fostering an equitable world”

She described Women’s Empowerment as a Catalyst for Change. According to her, empowerment is more than just a concept; it is the foundation for progress. When women are empowered, they become agents of change, breaking cycles of poverty, discrimination, and marginalization. However, empowerment cannot happen in isolation—it requires a supportive ecosystem of laws, policies, and community engagement that encourages women's participation in all spheres of life.”

In her words:

“Women’s health is at the core of empowerment. Access to quality healthcare, maternal services, and mental health support is essential for women to thrive. However, health disparities, lack of reproductive rights, and gender-based violence (GBV) continue to threaten women's well-being. Accelerating action means ensuring universal healthcare coverage, sexual and reproductive rights, and policies addressing gender-based violence.”

“Women Deserve a Seat at the Table. Women remain underrepresented in political, economic, and social leadership positions. While progress has been made, structural barriers, societal norms, and unconscious bias continue to prevent women from accessing leadership roles. Accelerating action calls for inclusive leadership policies, mentorship programs, and equal representation in decision-making processes to ensure that women's voices are heard and respected.” Dr Binta said.

While describing education and training as the Key to breaking barriers, Dr Binta said, “ education is a game-changer. Yet, millions of girls worldwide still face barriers such as poverty, early marriage, and gender discrimination that limit their access to education and skill development. Bridging the gender gap in education means investing in STEM programs for girls, vocational training, and policies that eliminate gender-based discrimination in learning institutions.”

Dr Binta who called on women globally to impact positively in the society said, “to every woman: You are powerful, resilient, and capable of transforming the world. Do not let societal limitations define you. Stand up, take space, and claim your rights. Your voice matters, your dreams are valid, and your contributions are essential to global progress”. Dr Binta said.
