IWD 2026: NAWOJ FCT Pushes for Women’s Rights, Announces Free Cancer Screening for Female Journalists

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, joins women across Nigeria and the world to commemorate International Women’s Day 2026, celebrated globally under the theme: “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls”, with the campaign call #GiveToGain.

This year’s theme serves as a powerful reminder that achieving gender equality requires more than conversations. It demands deliberate actions to protect the rights of women and girls, ensure justice where those rights are violated, and take bold steps to guarantee equal opportunities and inclusion for women in all sectors of society.

As journalists and advocates, NAWOJ FCT remains committed to amplifying the voices of women, particularly those whose stories often go unheard. We will continue to use our platforms to highlight issues affecting women and girls while advocating for policies that promote equality, justice, and dignity for all.

In line with this commitment, NAWOJ FCT has continued to collaborate with critical stakeholders to improve the welfare and professional capacity of female journalists. One of such collaborations is with the Federal Medical Centre and the Federal Ministry of Health, where arrangements have been made to provide free cancer screening for female journalists in the FCT. This initiative underscores the importance of prioritizing women’s health, especially through early detection and prevention of cancer.

Furthermore, to mark International Women’s Day 2026, NAWOJ FCT, in partnership with the German Embassy, is implementing two key programmes aimed at empowering women journalists. The first is a capacity-building programme for female journalists, designed to strengthen professional skills and leadership capabilities. The second is a Marketplace Advocacy Event, which will provide a platform to engage grassroots women, promote advocacy on issues affecting women and girls, and strengthen community awareness.

NAWOJ FCT also reiterates its commitment to amplifying the voices of women in leadership and decision-making spaces. We will continue to work closely with NAWOJ National and other women-focused organisations to support the ongoing advocacy for the actualization of Special Seats for Women in governance, a critical step toward improving women’s representation in political leadership and decision-making processes in Nigeria.

As we mark this important day, we call on governments, institutions, and stakeholders to intensify efforts toward ensuring equal rights, equal opportunities, and equal protection for women and girls.

NAWOJ FCT also commends female journalists in the Federal Capital Territory for their resilience, professionalism, and unwavering commitment over the years. Your dedication to telling the stories of our society, particularly those affecting women and vulnerable groups, continues to make a meaningful impact.
