Give to Gain: NUJ FCT Chairman, Grace Ike, Calls for Greater Investment in Women

As the world commemorates International Women’s Day 2026, I join millions across the globe in celebrating the strength, resilience, brilliance, and limitless potential of women. The theme for this year, “Give to Gain,” is a powerful reminder that when we deliberately invest in women—through education, mentorship, opportunities, and resources—we are not simply uplifting individuals; we are strengthening families, communities, institutions, and nations.

For me, this year’s celebration holds a deeply personal significance.

As the first female Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, I stand on the shoulders of courageous women who broke barriers, challenged stereotypes, and refused to accept limitations placed on their dreams. My journey reflects what becomes possible when society chooses to give women the space and opportunity to lead, contribute, and excel.

The theme “Give to Gain” perfectly captures this truth. When women are empowered, the benefits extend far beyond the individual. Newsrooms become more inclusive, storytelling becomes richer, governance becomes more responsive, and societies become more just.

In journalism particularly, women have continued to demonstrate remarkable resilience, professionalism, and dedication to truth and public service. Across Nigeria, female journalists are breaking new ground—covering demanding beats, shaping public discourse, mentoring younger colleagues, and proving that excellence knows no gender.

However, celebration alone is not enough; it must translate into meaningful action. We must intentionally mentor young female journalists, create safe and supportive work environments, expand leadership opportunities, and ensure that women’s voices are represented in decision-making spaces. These are the investments that will yield lasting dividends for both the profession and society.

The United Nations’ call this year — “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls” — is a timely reminder that the pursuit of equality remains a shared responsibility. Governments, institutions, media organisations, and communities must work collectively to dismantle barriers that continue to hinder women’s progress.

On this special occasion, I celebrate the extraordinary women within the Nigerian Union of Journalists, the FCT media community, and across our nation. Your courage, intellect, and dedication continue to inspire a new generation of women who are learning that leadership is not beyond their reach.

Let us therefore recommit ourselves to giving more opportunities, stronger support systems, mentorship, and recognition to women. When women rise, journalism rises; our communities thrive, and our nation grows stronger.
