InterSociety’s Claim on Killing of 1,402 Christians in 96 Days Questioned by Group

The Democratic Front (TDF) has raised concerns over a recent claim by the Onitsha-based group, Intersociety, alleging that 1,402 Christians were killed within 96 days, describing the report as questionable and potentially misleading.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Mallam Danjuma Muhammad, and Secretary, Chief Wale Adedayo, the group said the claim should be carefully scrutinized, noting that such figures, if not properly substantiated, could affect the country’s image internationally.

The statement read in part: “We recall that Intersociety, led by Mr. Emeka Umeagbalasi, has previously made strong claims regarding insecurity in Nigeria. While concerns about security are valid, it is important that such reports are backed by verifiable data to avoid misrepresentation.

“This is especially important given ongoing efforts by the current administration to address insecurity across the country.”

The group also expressed concern over what it described as a lack of detailed information supporting the claim, such as specific locations, timelines, and circumstances of the alleged incidents.

“It is important for any organization making such serious allegations to provide clear and verifiable evidence, including when, where, and how such incidents occurred,” the statement added.

While acknowledging that insecurity remains a challenge in Nigeria, the group noted that violence has affected different communities across religious and ethnic lines.

“It is important to present a balanced view of the situation, recognizing that various groups have been impacted by the ongoing security challenges,” it said.

The TDF called for a thorough and objective review of the claim to establish the facts.

“The relevant authorities may consider looking into these allegations to ensure clarity and accountability. This will help prevent the spread of misinformation and promote a more accurate understanding of the situation,” the statement concluded.

The group emphasized the need for responsible communication on sensitive national issues, urging stakeholders to prioritize accuracy and national cohesion.
