Easter: Defence Chief Urges Journalists to Uphold Truth, Unity; NUJ Calls for Renewed Professional Commitment

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, has called on journalists to uphold truth and professionalism as essential pillars for national unity and security, noting that Nigeria’s stability depends not only on military operations but also on responsible information management.

Represented at an Easter retreat organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Oluyede reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to defending the nation amid persistent security challenges. He expressed confidence that Nigeria will overcome its current trials, drawing inspiration from the Easter message of hope and renewal.

“Nigeria continues to confront complex security challenges, yet we remain resilient. Our experience shows that trials are not permanent and renewal is always possible when faith and unity prevail,” he said.

The defence chief reiterated the military’s determination to tackle terrorism, insurgency, banditry and other threats, adding that the sacrifices of troops have contributed significantly to restoring normalcy in affected communities.

He stressed the strategic role of the media in national security, urging journalists to prioritise accuracy and avoid reports capable of inciting fear or division.

“In today’s information age, security operations are fought not only on the battlefield but also in the information domain. Accurate and responsible reporting strengthens national unity and builds public trust,” he added.

Oluyede also called on Nigerians to support security agencies through cooperation and timely intelligence, while paying tribute to fallen heroes and urging prayers for troops in operational theatres.

In his remarks, the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, underscored the importance of ethical journalism in nation-building, accountability and democratic governance.

He noted that ethical reporting promotes transparency, combats corruption and strengthens institutions, stressing that an informed citizenry is vital for national development.

“A nation is not built only with infrastructure, but with trust, accountability and an informed citizenry. Ethical journalism shines light into dark corners and holds leaders accountable,” he said.

Badaru added that responsible journalism fosters unity, curbs misinformation and promotes social cohesion in a diverse society, while also serving as a voice for the vulnerable.

Earlier, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, urged journalists to draw inspiration from the Easter message by renewing their commitment to truth, integrity and professional excellence.

She acknowledged the pressures faced by media practitioners—including tight deadlines, risks associated with truth-telling and societal expectations—but encouraged them to remain steadfast.

“Operating in the Federal Capital Territory places a unique responsibility on us. We are at the center of national discourse. Our words carry weight, our reports influence decisions, and our integrity strengthens democracy,” she said.

Ike also called for unity within the union, describing it as critical to advancing journalism and safeguarding press freedom.

“As a union, we must continue to stand together. Unity is our strength, and through collective resolve, we can overcome any obstacle,” she added.

The Easter retreat, themed “Resurrection Power: Grace, Faith, Hope and New Life,” brought together journalists, security officials and other stakeholders to reflect on faith, responsibility and the role of the media in national development. The event featured presentations from various NUJ chapels, including Information, NAN, Correspondents, FRCN Operations, FRCN Headquarters, Flame Chapel and ITV, alongside guest performances.
