BPW Nigeria to Mark International Day of the Girl Child, Partners SheRise Girls Development Initiative
Abuja, October 6, 2026 — Business and Professional Women (BPW) Nigeria will join the global community on October 11, 2026, to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child, reaffirming its commitment to advancing the rights, education, leadership, safety and economic empowerment of girls across Nigeria.
The International Day of the Girl Child, observed annually on October 11, provides an opportunity to highlight the challenges girls face and promote actions that enable them to reach their full potential.
As part of this year's commemoration, various BPW Nigeria Clubs across the country are preparing activities targeted at BPW Lites and Young BPW, with programmes designed to encourage confidence, leadership, mentorship, entrepreneurship, career development, financial literacy and responsible participation in society.
The activities will provide girls and young women with opportunities to interact with accomplished women professionals and entrepreneurs, gain practical knowledge and develop skills that can support their personal, educational and future career aspirations.
BPW Nigeria will also collaborate with the SheRise Girls Development Initiative to strengthen the impact of the programme and promote greater attention to issues affecting girls, including education, economic opportunities, leadership development, protection and access to supportive networks.
Speaking ahead of the commemoration, National President of BPW Nigeria, Ojobo Atuluku, said investing in girls was essential to building stronger families, communities and nations.
«“Every girl deserves the opportunity to learn, to dream, to lead and to build a future defined by her abilities and aspirations. When we invest in girls today, we are investing in the women, professionals, entrepreneurs, mothers and leaders of tomorrow.
**“At BPW Nigeria, we believe that empowerment must begin early. Through our BPW Lites and Young BPW programmes, we are creating platforms where girls can develop confidence, discover their potential, learn from women role models and understand that their voices matter.
“This International Day of the Girl Child, we are encouraging our Clubs to take meaningful action in their communities. Our partnership with SheRise Girls Development Initiative further demonstrates our commitment to working with like-minded organisations to create opportunities and safer, more supportive environments for girls to thrive.”»
The President further called on parents, schools, government institutions, civil society organisations, the private sector and other stakeholders to strengthen investments in girls' education, skills development, mentorship and protection.
She noted that empowering girls should not be limited to a single annual observance but should remain a sustained commitment that translates into practical opportunities and lasting change.
The BPW Nigeria Clubs are expected to organise and participate in a range of activities around the commemoration, including mentorship sessions, leadership and career talks, entrepreneurship and financial literacy engagements, educational outreach, skills development, interactive sessions and other community-based initiatives for BPW Lites and Young BPW.
Through these activities, BPW Nigeria seeks to inspire girls to become confident, informed and economically empowered young women capable of making positive contributions to their families, communities and the nation.
The Federation also encouraged girls to take advantage of available opportunities, seek mentorship, develop relevant skills and remain committed to their education and personal development.
BPW Nigeria remains committed to its vision of empowering women and girls and strengthening pathways for their meaningful participation in economic, professional and social development.
