NUJ FCT Correspondents’ Chapel Pushes for Stronger Unionization, Better Welfare

Journalists in Nigeria have been advised to adopt collective bargaining and stronger union structures to improve their welfare and working conditions.

Founder of Hope Raisers Global Foundation, Amb. Angonimi David-Umeh, gave the advice at the NUJ FCT Correspondents’ Chapel End-of-Year Party in Abuja. She noted that welfare remains the backbone of productivity, stressing that collective bargaining is not agitation but “organized conversations that promote fairness, dignity and shared progress.”

Umeh explained that bargaining enables workers to negotiate better salaries, safe work environments, health support and career development. She cited ASUU, NLC and NMA as examples of how unionism has helped protect welfare in the education, labour and health sectors.

In her remarks, Chairperson of NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, represented by Comrade Yahaya Ndambabo, said journalism excellence can only thrive where welfare is prioritized. She praised the Correspondents’ Chapel for upholding the union’s values.

Correspondents’ Chapel Chairman, Mr. Felix Ojo, highlighted key activities carried out in 2025 but lamented that journalists remain excluded from major welfare structures despite their critical role in society.

The event also featured the presentation of awards and certificates to deserving individuals.
