Weekenders Magazine Publisher Calls for Scientific Verification to Protect Consumers

The Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Weekenders Magazine, Princess Joy Omagha Idam, has called on the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to examine recent claims concerning the presence of potentially harmful chemicals in some sanitary pads.

Princess Idam said the concerns deserve appropriate scientific attention, given the widespread use of sanitary pads by women and girls. She noted that consumers need clear, evidence-based information from the relevant regulatory authorities regarding the safety and quality of sanitary products available in the Nigerian market.

She therefore urged NAFDAC to consider conducting appropriate laboratory assessments of selected sanitary pads, where necessary, to establish whether the products meet applicable safety and quality standards.

“This is not about creating unnecessary fear or making accusations against manufacturers. It is about ensuring that consumers have access to reliable information and can be confident in the products they use,” Princess Idam said.

She also encouraged NAFDAC to make relevant findings available to the public and, where any product is found not to meet established regulatory requirements, take appropriate action in line with its mandate.

Princess Idam further called on manufacturers and importers of sanitary products to cooperate with regulatory authorities and maintain the highest standards of quality and consumer safety.

She stressed that a transparent, science-based assessment would help clarify the concerns surrounding the reported claims, distinguish facts from speculation, and provide women and families with the information they need to make informed choices.
